Thematic Frame
Setting
Source is set entirely within the universe of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. The story occurs two centuries after an anti-technology revolution destroyed the Third Era government of the Three Saints (Apple Bloom, Scootaloo, and Sweetie Belle), and 1,400 years following an unknown event that destroyed the ancient sovereign states of Equestria, Saddle Arabia, Maretania, and the Zebra Tribal Federation.
Equestria is now an arctic tundra; a vast biome covered in Windigo-produced hoarfrost.
Technological advancements have been forcefully stagnated by an oligarchical organization known as the Church of Solstice. The titular organization now controls all of the known world.
Plot
The story follows an earth pony chemist named Lozenge and (through the narrative asides of Discord) an earth pony revolutionary named Chamberlain, as they respectively try to prevent and precipitate the Summer Sun Celebration, an event that will supposedly awaken an ancient goddess and change the world.
Writing
Narrative Distance
Narration of the story is provided through the limited first-person perspective of Lozenge, with elements of third-person limited and dramatic direction.
Use of Non-traditional Construction
A stylistic staple of the story is Hierophant's deliberate manipulation of time and narrative syntax. Whenever the in-story narrator's (Lozenge's) mental state changes her narration likewise alters. Examples include trauma, drug-induced hallucination, magical conditions, out-of-body experiences, and, notably, travelling through time without realizing it.
During several story events, Lozenge connects to a hive-mind environment, where she refers to herself as "we" and "us" and views the world through a multi-locus auspice. According to the author, these passages were written to be deliberately confusing to show the difficulty an individual mind would have interacting with a multi-conscious space. This also occurs when she uses the "Compassion" serum, as it gives her a degree of empathy verging on mind-reading and mind control, with her being unable to control from whose perspective she looks.
The author also uses classical methods of pace manipulation, such as using longer sentences and verbose construction during periods of suspense, and choppier sentences when the narrator's thought process is interrupted or is otherwise disinterested. This all comes together into a "stream of consciousness" writing style reminiscent of James Joyce and William Faulkner.
This perspective play is consciously spoofed in-universe when Lozenge remarks she needs to "stop these Whinniam Foalkner episodes".
Development
Inspiration
The story draws inspiration from several science fiction plenums, primarily Walter M. Miller, Jr.'s A Canticle for Leibowitz and Harlan Ellison's A Boy and His Dog. The cyclic progression of interspersed periods of reconstruction and calamity is a hallmark of A Canticle for Leibowitz. The original working title was "A Canticle for Scootaloo". The story's afterward retains that title.
